artist’s statement
“I see, therefore I am,” could be a photographer’s mantra. Now, with digital cameras and photographic software programs, photographers have a new way of seeing. For twelve years I have enlarged and enhanced images from negative film in my darkroom. Leaving my darkroom to sit behind a computer and learn a new language has been frustrating and filled with anxiety, yet at times it has been exhilarating.
In this learning process, I have realized that there is a fine line between graphic design and the art of photography. It is easy to get carried away with the software capabilities and to lose this focus when one is trying to create an artistic image. Time and talent will sort out what photographic works have redeeming and lasting qualities.
bio
I was born and raised in southern Illinois. When I was quite young I traveled through Europe with my parents where I was introduced to the classic arts, as well as world class museums. I earned a B.A. degree in Political Science from Stanford University, with a minor in Art. Over the years, I have studied life drawing, print making, silk-screen techniques, acrylics, and watercolor. My interest in color photography came about while living on the island of Sicily, Italy for three years. Upon returning to California, I studied photography and photographic history under Jack Fulton, Wanda Hammerbeck, and Suda House, plus attending numerous workshops. I have exhibited in San Diego since 1994 at the San Diego Art Institute, and I am represented in a number of private collections in Seattle, Albuquerque, New York City, and Madison, Wisconson, and throughout Southern California. I have received recognition in Nikon’s International Photo Contest.
